European Accommodations
Rachel Klem
When travelling to Europe, deciding on places to stay can be difficult. Generally, people on tight budgets will opt to stay in hostels. This can be a great option for people travelling in groups or for people looking to meet like-minded travellers. However, not everyone feels comfortable sharing accommodations with people they do not know. Additionally, contrary to popular belief, hostels may be more expensive than normal hotel rooms depending on the situation. Since travellers are generally charged on a per-person basis, couples or small groups of people travelling together can often find cheaper accommodations at hotels. This is especially true when avoiding peak season. For example, hotel rooms at large hotel chains in major European cities can range from as little as $40-$60/night depending on the time of year and the location. Travellers lucky enough to stumble upon hotel sales may even find massive discounts – though rare, it is possible to find high-end hotel rooms for as low as $20/night in major urban centres. Basically, the key to finding a great place to stay when in Europe is to research. Travel companies frequently offer sales and price cuts on hotel rooms. Simply watching prices on websites such as Expedia, Priceline, Orbitz or RedTag can ensure you find the best possible accommodations in any city you plan to travel to. It is important to consider location and ease of travel when deciding on places to stay. If location is not a high priority, staying outside of major cities can often lead to significant cost savings. However, if the accommodations are not close to attractions or public transit, these cost savings will quickly be eaten up in cab fare. Essentially, choosing the right places to stay will depend on personal preferences. However, if budget is the main concern, hotels may provide more cost savings than hostels.
